Digital Therapists: Can AI Fill the Mental Health Gap?

Recently, I’ve been encountering multiple articles of people affirming that they are using AI as their co-founders, work partners, personal advisors, etc. However, there is one use case that has recently caught my attention: people are using AI as their psychologist as well. I question whether it is safe or not. Most healthcare systems in the world have failed to provide mental health access to their citizens. People have to spend a significant amount of money attending a psychologist, and, what could be even worse, there are still people who think that mental health is not a real issue. Well, I think that people using AI as a psychologist is both a risk and an opportunity. But if we want to maximize the opportunity, namely, to give mental health support to most people in the world, the market alone is not the solution. The public sector should also take action.
