Executive Summary
The AI development landscape reached new heights this week as coding assistant Cursor achieved a staggering $9.9 billion valuation while generating over $500 million in annual recurring revenue, demonstrating the explosive demand for AI-powered developer tools. Meanwhile, the competitive dynamics intensified with Mistral launching its enterprise-focused coding platform and Anthropic severing ties with Windsurf amid acquisition rumors, while creative AI expanded further as Manus entered the video generation market to challenge industry leaders like OpenAI's Sora.
Developer Tools Revolution
Cursor's Anysphere Rockets to $9.9B Valuation on Explosive $500M ARR Growth
Anysphere, the company behind AI coding assistant Cursor, secured a massive $900 million funding round at a $9.9 billion valuation, led by Thrive Capital with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, and DST Global. The three-year-old startup has achieved remarkable growth with annual recurring revenue surpassing $500 million and doubling approximately every two months, marking one of the fastest growth trajectories in startup history. The funding represents Anysphere's third major raise in less than a year, highlighting investor confidence in AI coding tools as developers increasingly adopt "vibe coding" assistants for enhanced productivity.

Mistral Launches Enterprise-Grade Coding Assistant to Challenge GitHub Copilot
Mistral AI unveiled Mistral Code, a comprehensive AI-powered coding platform designed specifically for enterprise developers seeking secure, on-premises deployment options. The platform integrates four specialized models including Codestral for code completion, Devstral for agentic coding, and Mistral Medium for chat assistance, all deployable in cloud, reserved capacity, or air-gapped on-premise environments. Major enterprise customers including Spain's Abanca bank, France's SNCF railway company, and consulting giant Capgemini have already adopted the platform, which offers fine-tuning capabilities and supports over 80 programming languages while maintaining enterprise-grade security and compliance controls.

Meta
"Our goal with Mistral Code is simple: deliver best-in-class coding models to enterprise developers, enabling everything from instant completions to multi-step refactoring".

Anthropic Cuts Windsurf's Claude Access Amid OpenAI Acquisition Speculation
Anthropic abruptly terminated Windsurf's direct access to Claude models with less than five days' notice, creating disruption for the popular AI coding platform's users. The move comes amid widespread reports that OpenAI is acquiring Windsurf for approximately $3 billion, positioning Anthropic to focus on long-term strategic partners and its own coding assistant, Claude Code. While other AI coding tools including Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Cognition's Devin maintain access to Claude models, Windsurf users must now rely on third-party providers or personal API keys to continue using Anthropic's models, highlighting the increasing strategic importance of AI model access in the competitive coding assistant market.

"Anthropic is shifting focus toward long-term partners and its own coding assistant, Claude Code".
Creative AI Expansion
Manus AI Enters Video Generation Race with Text-to-Video Platform
Chinese AI startup Manus launched a comprehensive text-to-video generation feature, positioning itself as a direct competitor to OpenAI's Sora, Google's video AI tools, and established players like Runway and Synthesia. The platform enables users to create structured, sequenced video stories from simple text prompts, incorporating a Deep Research Assistant Agent that conducts research before video production to enhance output quality and relevance. Currently available in early access for Basic, Plus, and Pro members, Manus aims to democratize video creation by transforming single prompts into complete stories with planned scenes, crafted visuals, and animated content, marking the company's most ambitious expansion into the rapidly growing generative video AI market.

It’s Tim Cook Time
Apple’s WWDC25 is about to kick off, and once again, Tim Cook has a chance to surprise the world. But let’s be honest, this time, the spotlight is on AI. The only way Apple can truly impress is by delivering powerful, working AI tools to its massive user base.
Apple may not always be the first to the party, but as they like to say, they arrive when the technology is ready. Historically, they’ve shown that while they might be late, they often end up being the best when they finally enter a new space.
Personally, I haven’t watched any “What to Expect” videos or read any rumours, I prefer to go in blind and enjoy the surprise. That said, I do have my own speculations. Hopefully, by next Monday, we’ll have plenty to talk about.
See you in the next issue!
Conclusion
This week's developments underscore the AI industry's rapid evolution from experimental technology to essential enterprise infrastructure, with coding assistants leading the charge toward mainstream adoption. Cursor's astronomical valuation and revenue growth demonstrate the market's appetite for productivity-enhancing AI tools, while Mistral's enterprise-focused approach and Anthropic's strategic realignment signal a maturing competitive landscape where platform control and partnership strategies are becoming increasingly critical. As creative AI simultaneously expands into new domains like video generation, we're witnessing the emergence of a multi-billion-dollar ecosystem where AI capabilities are becoming as fundamental to business operations as traditional software infrastructure.
